How Clothing Choices Can Transform Your Confidence
Is there a quicker and more enjoyable short-cut to a confidence boost than simply getting dressed in the right outfit?
If so, then I have yet to find it.
Looking beautiful can feel like hard work sometimes, and actually feeling beautiful can be an almost insurmountable challenge. We are bombarded with images of perfection at every corner, adverts on our phones, on TV, posters, magazines. It is impossible to avoid.
It can be difficult to remember that the perfection portrayed on posters is not actually human – we have seen the paparazzi shots of models and actresses ‘caught without makeup’ and shamed with humiliating headlines.
Whether we keep this in mind or not, the pressure to look a certain way is high. When the image reflected in the mirror falls short of our personal expectations we can descend into a pit of self-hate, and it can be hard to climb out again.
What Can You Do?
Fortunately there is a simple trick that works like magic to transform your silhouette, your look, your style and most importantly your mindset. The answer lies inside your closet.
It is true, the clothes that you wear can have a profound impact on how you feel. That means that they have the power to give you an injection of self confidence and make you feel great. It works so well that the transformation is almost seamless, and it is hard to decide what came first – the confidence or the clothes!
Anybody can enjoy this rush of endorphins as they dress – it doesn’t matter what age, height or size you are. The key is dressing for your body type.
The Right Fit
No matter how fabulous the clothes in your closet are, they will only work miracles if they fit you perfectly. They must be designed for your body type and thereby flatter your shape. It is simply a case of following the rules of what is right for you – and what to avoid at all costs.
It is important that your clothes are not too big, so that your figure is swamped and hidden from sight. But remember that squeezing into a smaller size (just because you can) is also not recommended.
Anything that is too tight will ultimately lead to bulges, and will leave you feeling constricted – in other words uncomfortable and non-fabulous.
Focus On Your Assets
If you are like most of us, and spend the majority of your mirror time gazing dejectedly at your wobbly chin, flat butt or other perceived flaw. You may have failed to notice how awesome your ankles look in that skirt, or how great the curve of your waist looks with that belt.
Look at your body with fresh eyes and focus on the positive aspects for a change. These are the things that you want to highlight with your clothes. There are a ton of ways to disguise the bits you don’t love, so forget those for now and make a note of what you want to capitalize on.
It may sound like a cliche, but try using your clothes as a way to show who you are. Your style should be a reflection of your authentic self, and it doesn’t even matter if that changes every single day.
Follow your instincts when making new purchases – as long as you follow the rules that apply to your shape. You won’t go wrong. Don’t stress about fashion. Go with what makes you feel amazing and what resonates with who you are. Who knows, you might even set the next trend!
Yes, I am contradicting myself here by saying….follow the rules, but experiment.
Let me explain, the rules of your body shape are the fundamental foundation – but after that you are the boss! Try out different colors, textures, shoes, bags and accessories to create a perfect outfit that injects an element of fun and the unexpected into your wardrobe.
The only thing to remember is that you must feel confident before you walk out of the door. If you are feeling a bit unsure about those shoes, or maybe those earrings are too much….change! When you walk out of the door your insecurity will only increase.
So have fun, play with your outfit and when something feels right, stick with it.
Ditch The Bad Vibes
If you feel like rubbish when you look at a certain article of clothes…ditch them. I say this with confidence thanks to a group of researchers, led by Doctor Tombs from the University of Queensland, who are currently researching how we often transfer our emotions onto the clothes that we wear.
“Often people transfer negative emotions onto their clothing. If they go on a date and it doesn’t go well, they want to direct the negative feelings towards an object rather than themselves.”
“A dress that enhances the body can be valued not only because it makes the wearer feel more confident, but also because remembering the confidence and admiration these garments brought is valued long after it has ceased to be worn,” says the report. “Clothing is not only a source of anxiety but also a source of pride and pleasure.”
It seems that clothes become extricably attached to certain memories, which makes us love certain items in a way that could be considered irrational for some pieces of fabric.
“Clothes almost work like photographs: they bring back memories of a moment in your life. Some people have clothes from their teens and many people keep their wedding dresses, even though they will never wear them again. These clothes have such significance to them they couldn’t throw them away.
Smile in the mirror. Do that every morning and you’ll start to see a big difference in your life. ~ Yoko Ono
A smile is the best accessory to add to any outfit, and it will be most potent if you really feel it. When you feel confident in what you are wearing, it is hard to hide it. You know that feeling, when you are wearing an outfit you love, you walk differently, your posture changes and you hold your head high.
When you crack the code to what works for you, you will realize that you can get real joy and pleasure from the process of getting dressed. Your closet will be like your Wonder Woman cave of cloaks, ready to give you a confidence boost at any moment.
As Julia Zanes, founder of Instil Image says:
“When you look good, you feel good and you perform at a much higher level in your personal and professional life. It can work with your mood too. Sometimes you wake up and don’t feel good. I encourage my clients to dress as if they feel good. That impacts on their self-esteem and helps to shift them from a negative to a positive perspective.”
So next time you choose an outfit, remember that you have the power to make a difference in your day, simply by choosing something that is suited to your body shape, fits you wonderfully and expresses your true self.
What an amazing feat for a some fabric!
