Could Your 60’s Be The Most Stylish Decade?
It has happened. You have entered your 50’s or 60’s – time to bring on the granny clothes right?
Well if Hollywood is anything to go by, women, no matter how rich or glamorous they are tend to slip quietly away into the background once they reach a ‘certain age’. The tide is gradually turning for sure, but the few ladies that still grace our screens past 50 are the exception to the rule.
Hollywood is tough, but you don’t have to follow their rules!
- Yes, you can still look youthful and appealing!
- No, you don’t have to stop wearing makeup, avoid certain styles or stop wearing bold colors.
You can be stylish in your 60’s, 70’s and beyond. Don’t believe me? Take a look at these ladies on Advanced Style.
To be honest, it looks like the PERFECT opportunity to have a ball with your closet, and wear whatever you feel like!
By the time you reach this stage of your life there is one thing you should be sure of, what you like! So this is the time to express what you like and embrace your individuality. In general you should be aiming for a refined and smart look, with your own twist.
Clothes For 60 And Beyond
Many women have distorted ideas of what their body shape and size actually looks like, the number of years on our tally doesn’t appear to come with extra wisdom in this regard. We are still mean about our own reflections. Some of us think that we are 2 or 3 sizes different to what we actually are! Opting for lazy, loose fitting clothes is not the answer. Properly fitting clothes can really enhance your physical appearance and even take a few years off.
Remember, you don’t have to dress like ‘a grandmother’ just because you are one! Redefine what society thinks grandmothers should wear. You can be both age appropriate and youthful at the same time.
Your clothing and style should be tailored and uncluttered, accentuating your assets in a tasteful way. Know your lines. They should go up and down, not across, as this can make you look wider. Go for v-neck lines, long necklaces and open jackets.
Depending on your body shape, there are many types of clothing that will look great on you. For example, if you are worried about the size of your hips and waist, try peplum tops. It is generally appealing to define your waist. You can achieve this by wearing something that pulls in at the waist. A wide belt can do this but be careful with thin belts as they can make you look bigger than you actually are. Flared pants are another way to balance out the hips that you can try.
Want to wear a plunging neckline but you’re worried about an embarrassing mishap? Use double-sided tape to keep everything in place.
If you are still feeling clueless on what to wear, start with the basics. Aim for simple clothing, such as a white blouse and beige pants but make the focus your shoes.
Colors For 60 And Beyond
Certain colors suit our skin tones better. That’s not to say that you can’t wear certain colors, it’s just that others look particularly dazzling on you. If you imagine yourself in a wheat field, with a long dirt road ahead, and a straw hat with sunflowers all around you, then it is likely that you are a “warm” toned person. Yellow’s, browns, gold and purples will look good on your skin. If you imagine yourself in the ocean, with stunning coral and beautiful fish swimming past, it is likely that you are a “cool” toned person. Colors that suit a cool tone of skin are shades of blue, grey and black.
As a general rule however, older women should avoid pastel colors! Contradictory I know. While pastels can make you look girly but they can also add an extra 20 years to your age.
Makeup For 60 And Beyond
Many women believe that because they are older they need to stay away from makeup, especially bold lip colors. To this I say, why give up on this amazing toolkit when you need it most. You can consider make-up to be fun at worst and youth-in-a-bottle at best!
I know of women that have been patronized when it comes to wearing makeup: “Oh you still wear makeup? How cute!”. How rude!
The fact is, as we age, our natural skin pigment tends to fade – all the more reason to use makeup!
There are a few tweaks to make to your regime as you grow older, such as using cream-based products rather than powder-based ones. Powder tends to accentuate texture, something that we don’t really need to emphasize thank you very much.
You certainly do not need to avoid bold lipsticks and eyeliners. A general guideline for choosing lipstick is to go for something that matches you inner lip and gum, and eyeliner can become an accessory to your outfit.
As your needs change it is probably worth taking a trip to a makeup counter to get some personalized specialist knowledge.
Shoes For 60 And Beyond
Heels help with creating a smart and refined look, but this is one area to exercise caution. Be honest with yourself about your balance. Safety and health must come first.
A thin heel can make a larger woman look clumsy, and a wide heel is sturdier, so keep that in mind when shopping. If you find a heel that works then go for it. They can lengthen the leg and tend to make a woman hold herself with more confidence and walk better. For the appearance of an endless leg, opt for nude colored heels.
Underwear For 60 And Beyond
Firstly, remove the term ‘I am too old to….’ from your vocabulary, especially regarding lingerie!
You’re not too old to be wearing anything – and that includes G-strings!
If however you are feeling a shift in preferences away from thongs, make sure you choose seamless underwear.
If you are wearing white, it is important to choose undergarments that match your skin color. Wearing white underwear with white pants for example is still as visible as wearing black underwear.
Have your measurements taken to ensure that you are wearing the correct size and style bra. Support is essential! There are so many beautiful styles and colors available that you may end up needing a closet just for these.
Don’t forget loungewear, reignite your fantasies of silver screen fame by indulging in luxurious negligee – even if you are the only one who gets to enjoy it. Take a leaf from Rita Hayworth’s page. What is life for after all?
Accessories For 60 And Beyond
You are in charge here, it all comes down to your personal taste.
If you feel overdone, try removing the last thing you put on.
Try to avoid filling your wrists up with numerous bracelets, or a hand full of different rings. One or two of these items can make you look elegant and put together. Scarves are great accessories too. There are many creative ways to wear scarves. If you need a pop of color in your outfit, this is the way to go. Otherwise, be inspired by Iris Apfel and just go for it!
Hair Styles For 60 And Beyond
Soft pulled up hair instantly makes you look thinner. But be sure to not pull it back too harshly. Depending on the shape of your face, there are different hairstyles that could suit you well. Most older women tend to opt for shorter hairstyles. You may find that you don’t have the time to spend perfecting your hair like you used to. Arthritis may cause difficulty when it comes to reaching to the back of your head to style your hair.
The pixie haircut takes little to maintain for when you are juggling responsibilities and grandchildren! The bob is another timeless hairstyle that, if done right, falls into place effortlessly.
I hope we have reminded you that life can be fabulous regardless of the number of candles on your cake. You are not too old to enjoy stylish, gorgeous clothes. In fact there is no better time to experiment.
You can still have fun with style and fashion no matter what your age might be!
