What To Wear To A Spring Wedding
Hooray! So the day you’ve been looking forward to all winter is finally here! Your best friend’s wedding, and an added bonus it’s a Spring wedding. Double reason to celebrate.
What’s not to love about Spring? And who can resist a wedding? Both offer such a burst of positive energy and hope.
When it comes to dressing up for functions held during Spring, there is so much choice and when you dress for your body type, you will always look amazing. The weather will generally be on your side, which means you can go bold or subtle, long or short, with dresses, skirts or pants suits. Plus, with many weddings now taking a more relaxed to approach to venues and dress codes, it makes getting a hold of an appropriately awesome outfit a breeze.
Let’s go through a few scenarios.
Both church and courthouse weddings call for your Sunday Best, although your best office attire will suffice just the same. Pants suits are all the rage with a burst of color as an ode to Spring. With shoes, formal usually means heels, but this will usually extend to a sexy pair of strappy sandals.
One of my favorite kind of weddings are those crafty backyard types. Intimate and yet welcoming as well. Being involved in these feels like a real experience not just something you are watching. Everything about these weddings is usually ‘easy’, so dress for comfort. A good point to keep in mind, is to make sure whatever you are wearing has a bit of space, to allow for the bountiful buffet that often follows. 😉
A strapped summer dress would be a perfect choice here – dainty floral prints, soft free flowing fabric. Long or short dresses, even strapless ones, all work well for this type of event. Carry a matching cardigan or shawl for later, for when the temperature dips or in case of evening spring showers. I might add though, that some backyard weddings involve barns, and all the trimmings that come with farmyard event, so any outfit that will call for cowboy boots will be right on point!
Now there are two ways a beach wedding can swing. The semi formal, small and intimate beach weddings call for evening dresses in pale subtle colors, soft fabrics and fashionable shoes (that can handle sand) to match. A light shawl draped over the shoulder or elbows, adds a finishing touch. Casual beach weddings are a breeze. Dress in something light and short, (safe from the pesky sand or water). Strappy sandals make great footwear for this occasion. Or if you are brave enough, go barefoot!
Fancy hotel catered weddings are on another level totally. This calls for everything top notch. Think ‘private fashion show’! These are the ones where everyone competes to be the best dressed, wear the most fashionable hats and adorn themselves with the most bling. Hairstyles heavy enough to lift your nose in the air.
So my fashion tip for these events, is to dress for you! Wear an outfit suitable for any evening event, don’t over do the bling, stick to heels, and carry a shawl or throw! An up-style is perfect and will help show off those shiny studs. Think of it as an occasion where you get to play dress-up or princess for the day. If you truly want to stand out, why not throw a spanner in the works and go for a pant suit instead!
Hair and Makeup
I’m not a designer make-up, accessories or hairstyle diva. I tend to believe that ‘less is more’, but when it comes to weddings and special events, one has to make a special effort.
Semi-formal to formal calls for up-styles and buns better know as chignons, feel free to add a bit of embellishment. Makeup and accessories should both fit the outfit and the occasion.
Casual style weddings call for guests to be comfortable in what they are wearing. So hair could be free flowing or in a simple up-do. Make-up can be as subtle as you like and accessories are not a must. A sprig of flowers or bright bangles will do nicely.
If you planning to carry a handbag, I would advise on something small, which opens into a secret cavern to hold the essential items:
- Tissues for those happy tears
- Make-up for those camera ready touch ups
- A scent of your choice, so you always smell fresh
A ‘next-level’ tip is to always carry an extra pair of shoes, as well as spare outfit! One might never know when a might break or a glass of wine might spill.
Weddings bring out the princess in every woman. So don’t be afraid of being “too girly”. You can still portray being a strong woman whilst wearing a dress and delicate jewellery.
However, keep in mind that you shouldn’t try to steal the limelight from the bride. White tends to be a no-go zone for this reason. Did you notice that I also failed to mention another color? The little black dress!
Why? Because it is a standard choice for so many occasions, it is nice to break the mould once in awhile, and a spring wedding deserves a splash of color. Although, if you want to make sure you don’t cause a stir, try to find out the color theme so that you don’t clash or get swallowed into the décor!
