The Hottest Spring Accessory Trends
A new season is always a time of fun on the catwalk. New looks as well fresh takes on old trends filter down from the runway to the high street, and we are left to translate the designer’s concepts into our daily wardrobe.
It can be confusing trying to plan how best to put outfits together, not to mention expensive when our experiments don’t quite go to plan. Never fear, as always MSR has your back. We have picked out our top 10 of the most wearable trends for Spring 2016, and have created this article packed with tips for how to make it work for you and your own unique style.
Let’s kick off with a run down of the Spring Trends – but don’t run and hide if they leave you out of your depth. Hold on until the second half of the post, where we explain how to incorporate the new trends, so that you can look fresh for the new season, without blowing your budget.
1 Glitzy Head-Gear
This year the catwalk was teeming with tiaras for spring. They actually looked wonderful, perched all ablaze in sparkles on top of the models’ heads. But how does this translate into real life? Let’s be honest, we shouldn’t really start wearing our bridal head-dresses on a Tuesday with our jeans….
However, there is an everyday way to bring some glitz to our lives, with the gorgeous headbands that you can find in stores everywhere. You can opt for jewels, beads, fruits, flowers, feathers… there are literally options for every style and hair cut. Girly, sparkly, earthy, you name it.
2 Graphic Bags
This is my favorite item on this top ten list – just so versatile! Graphic bags come in all colors, prints, patterns and designs. You can find stripes, patches, materials galore. They can therefore mix and match with so many looks, and bring a pop of color that will keep your look fresh.
If there is one thing you pick up from this season’s trends, I would suggest you make it this one!
3 Lace Up Shoes
This is a cute sexy look that you can pair with almost any outfit. Lace up shoes come in flats, stilettos, boots and more, with laces that tie at the ankle, or climb all the way up to the knee. These look great with long pants, or even shorts and dresses that show off the whole design of your foot candy.
4 Chain It Up
This is a bit of a comeback trend, which you can easily make your own. Chains were everywhere on the catwalk this season, including belts, bags, shoes, embellishments on clothes, hair and even just across the body. You can pick up cheap chain belts from your local haberdashery and easily add them to your own outfits.
5 Long Earrings
This is an easy trend to wear, and you may well have some of these lurking in the back of your jewelry box. Long, statement earrings graced many designer runways – and when I say long, I mean shoulder dusters.
I have 2 tips for making this look work for you.
Firstly, if you have long hair, tie it up! Don’t lose the trend amongst your tresses! Secondly, pick your statement piece and go with that, i.e. if you are wearing big and bold earrings, don’t go overboard with a gigantic necklace too.
Long earrings can look fabulous, accentuating your neckline, which is oh so feminine.
6 Glittery Shoes
This look made me think of Dorothy’s sequin ruby slippers…in a good way! Shoes were deluxe, spangly and glittered to the max. But not only with pumps, we are also talking about sneakers as well as stilettos. The result was surprisingly cute, making this a unique way to add a bit of ‘girly-ness’ to your look.
Hands up, who has been waiting for the choker to crawl out of the 90s and back into our modern day lives? It can’t be only me?
The choker, or as it is also known nowadays, the collar necklace, was a solid trend on the catwalk this season. They were present in all kinds materials, leather, metal, lace and pearl amongst them. To keep things fresh you can try pairing a choker with a long necklace. This is a super easy trend to add to your repertoire.
8 Fishnets & Patterned Socks
Sexiness was the name of the game when it came to tights and socks of the season. Fishnets and patterns of all kinds are on trend, and the perfect way to see in the turn of the season as the weather starts to warm up. They are an inexpensive way to update your look without splurging, and look great with boots and pumps alike.
9 Platform Sandals
Bigger was better when it came to sandals this season. There was one word that came to my mind – chunky. Let me put it this way, it looked as though the models got a workout from lifting those bad boys!
A thick solid platform, under wide straps was the key look, which makes spring dresses look edgy, and is hot with tight pants. This may not be right for everyone, try on a few pairs before making a call.
10 Colors of the Season
The colors on the catwalk for spring were bright and beautiful. We saw buttercup yellow, bright green, limpet shell and iced coffee. I generally recommend that these are picked up as accessories in the various trends set out above (hint: graphic bags!) but let’s cover that in more detail below.
Before you rush out to purchase a ton of goodies to create your perfect spring closet, finish reading and save yourself a lot of money and disappointment. The first thing that you need to do, is create a wardrobe plan. That means, taking everything out of your closet and organizing it!
How can you know what your spring accessories will work with, if you can’t remember what you have? So start there. Organize your closet into tops, pants, jeans, skirts, jackets etc. Only the ones that suit your body type mind, the others should be removed from your closet permanently!
Once you have done that, organize each section into colors, and display (if space allows) in a way that lets you see everything you have without requiring a map and compass. Pay special attention to pieces that are neutral, as they will work extra well with your spring accessories.
Once you know what you have, you can make a shopping plan. Are there any gaps in your wardrobe? Basic pieces that you don’t own yet?
When you can assess your closet this way, you won’t waste money on an item that you already have three of. When it comes to filling these gaps, you should ideally be opting for trend-proof pieces. Now you are ready to add the fun bits.
Take a look at the spring trends in our list above and identify the ones that jumped out for you. Remember, you don’t need to go for everything on the list. Take a look at the accessories that you already own, and see if there is anything there that you can repurpose. Some of the trends that we identified above are easy to create at home, especially adding chains to a bag or making a choker with a strip of pretty material. I would recommend picking a couple of accessories to add to your repertoire, to keep your look on point for the season.
Remember, the most important things are that you dress for your body type, and go with your personal style. Follow your fun, and you won’t go wrong!
